Nutrition basics part 2

Three ways to trust your body rather than a one size fits all diet. Last post I introduced our new and improved food pyramid. Today we will learn about step one. This is the first skill we need to learn to master nutrition basics. As always, consistency is key.

Mindfulness- “The ability to pay attention, to be self-aware, to be thoughtful of our choices, and to be present in the moment. This is important because most of us “zone out” when we eat, and don’t notice how food or our eating habits make us feel or perform.” (1)

Appetite Awareness- “The ability to recognize physical hunger or fullness; to be able to distinguish ‘I want to eat’ from ‘I need to each;’ and to eat the right amount for our physiological needs.”(1)

  1. Ask yourself “Am I physically hungry?’ before you eat. Many women have unlearned their natural hunger and satiety cues. Asking yourself if you are hungry before eating helps you tap back into your natural instincts.

  2. Breathe between bites. Slowing down and enjoying your food will help bring awareness to your body’s cues letting you know you are hungry or full.

  3. Eat distraction-free. Try eating at the table with no electronic devices. This will help keep you from zoning out and become mindful of your meal.

My hope is that these three tips will take you from asking “how much should I eat?” to relying on your instincts and self-regulation.
